What "plasma" means here
Plasma is the fourth state of matter — an ionized gas. When a sealed tube of noble gas is exposed to a strong high-frequency electromagnetic field, the gas ionizes and glows, emitting photons at wavelengths characteristic of that gas. This is the same physics behind neon signs and plasma globes, applied deliberately as a light source. Different gases yield different spectra: neon skews orange-red, argon toward violet-blue, and xenon produces a broad near-white output containing ultraviolet and near-infrared. The result is a continuous, broadband emission rather than the one or two narrow bands an LED produces.
The two mechanisms
1. Photobiomodulation (the light)
The best-established way light affects living tissue is photobiomodulation (PBM). Red and near-infrared photons are absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase, an enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, which modulates cellular energy (ATP) production and downstream signaling. 2. Pulsed electromagnetic field (the field)
The high-frequency Tesla-coil drive that ionizes the gas also produces a pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) — the same mechanism family the FDA has cleared for bone-healing since 1979, characterized over decades by researchers including Bassett and Pilla. The honest state of the evidence
Here is the intellectually honest position: the two mechanisms plasma light engages — photobiomodulation and PEMF — are each independently well-researched. The specific combined plasma modality has far fewer direct clinical studies. Anyone claiming plasma light therapy is a proven treatment for a named disease is overstating what the research supports. It is best understood as a wellness and biohacking modality grounded in established biophysics, not a medical treatment.
